Lighting
Lighting sets the mood of a room.
It's how you interact with your space.
Are you comfortable?
- Can you see what you're trying to do?
- Do you have a feeling of being safe?
- Is the lighting conducive to what you are trying to do?
- Are there architectural features you want to enhance?
- Are there areas of interest to highlight (art)?
- Will you be watching TV or a movie?
- Does the lighting have to change from activity to activity?
A room has to serve different functions and the lighting is like a gearshift to move you through your daily routine.
Anyone in the electrical trade can sell lighting controls and wire up dimmers. We, however, know how the system should be mapped out and programmed. It is important not to over-complicate the system and make it unusable or under deliver on the programming... installing and walking away. After the customer uses a basic move-in plan to become comfortable with the system, we spend a couple of evenings in the home to understand what goes on in every room. We then make adjustments to tailor the system to their situation.
Obviously these adjustments must be made after dark when the family is at home. The electrical trade is not interested in working past 3:30 in the afternoon. We offer a totally different level of service. We will come out at 8:30 PM to make an adjustment for a party the next evening.
The system makes programmed changes by the clock. Scene changes or multiple light changes are made from a master keypad and individual lights can be adjusted from wall keypads without overwriting the program. You can monitor and change all the lights in the house form a master keypad.
If lighting knocks out your computer or in the event of a computer crash your lights will still work with the manual backup system we provide in our designs.
We can also provide a wireless RF system that makes any home a candidate for sophisticated lighting control.
Lighting Design
The two disciplines of good lighting design are:
- Fixture selection
- Layout design
Dimming levels are important to transform a room from a place where you have been working to a space suitable for a romantic evening with your wife by the fire.
- Which lights are on at what level?
- What walls are washed?
- What is accented?
Lighting control gives you the ability to hit complicated dimming levels exactly every time. You can recreate settings exactly. You can have the best musical instrument in the world but if you can't hit the notes, what is the point?
There is a built in astronomical time clock that does the things you usually want to do.
- Turn the exterior lights off at 10 PM.
- It can track sunrise and sunset.Adjusting exterior lights accordingly.
- When you are away on vacation the system will repeat your settings from the previous 7 days, giving the appreance to the outside world that you are at home.
Arming or disarming security devices can trigger lighting events.
- Flashing exterior lights with a security breach.
- Setting all lights to 40% in case of fire (to see better in smoke filled rooms).
People are often leery of Smart House technology... afraid they can't learn it or that they will mess something up and wouldn't be able to turn on the lights. Ours is one button simple.
Lights can be individually changed without overwriting the program.
The key is programming.
There is an art to programming... knowing the capabilities of the system and the owner. Being able to make intelligent recommendations to person building a house is one of the most powerful things we do. No one wants to make a mistake. We can tell you what other people like you are doing. Popular trends are popular for a reason.
