Key cards are flat PVC credentials, roughly credit-card size, with an embedded antenna and chip. That chip can use proximity technology at 125 kHz, smart card technology at 13.56 MHz, or in some cases magnetic stripe. Key fobs are compact, molded-plastic devices designed to attach to a key ring, running the same underlying RFID or smart card technology. A fob with a 13.56 MHz smart card chip and a card with the same chip are, from a security standpoint, equivalent. The shape is a usability consideration, not a security one.

Where Each Format Has a Real Advantage

Knowing the formats are technically comparable doesn’t make the choice arbitrary. The physical differences create meaningful practical distinctions depending on the environment and the people carrying the credentials.

Key Cards for Visual Identification
Key cards support printed photo ID, employee name, department color-coding, and security holograms on the card surface itself. In corporate office environments, healthcare facilities, or spaces housing government-adjacent tenants, electronic authentication alone isn’t always sufficient. A card that visually identifies the holder adds a second verification layer that a security desk or fellow employee can act on without any system interaction. For organizations managing contractors, multi-tenant access, or compliance-sensitive areas, that distinction matters.

Key Fobs for Durability & Convenience
Fobs attach to a keychain, which changes the loss-and-damage calculus considerably. Thin PVC card stock bends, cracks, and demagnetizes when it shares a wallet with other cards. Molded fob housing resists the daily physical wear that facilities staff, maintenance personnel, and outdoor workers put credentials through. For anyone who isn’t carrying a badge holder or lanyard as part of their daily routine, a fob is simply more practical.

Why Chip Technology Is the Decision That Actually Sticks

This is the part most credential comparisons skip, and it’s where the most consequential decisions get made. Security level is determined by the chip technology embedded in the credential, not whether it’s shaped like a card or a fob.

Older 125 kHz proximity credentials, still common in commercial buildings that haven’t upgraded their access control infrastructure, transmit data with no encryption. Because the signal is unencrypted, these credentials can be cloned with commercially available hardware in seconds, a well-documented vulnerability in physical security circles. Moving to 13.56 MHz smart card credentials changes that picture significantly: smart card technology supports strong encryption and mutual authentication between the credential and the reader, making cloning substantially more difficult.

The infrastructure implication is critical. Upgrading from proximity to smart card technology typically requires replacing readers, not just issuing new credentials. The reader standard selected at installation determines what upgrades are available later. A facility that installs proximity readers today will face a full reader replacement if it wants encrypted smart card credentials in three years (a meaningful cost and operational disruption that the initial form-factor conversation rarely surfaces). When evaluating any commercial access control system, confirm whether it uses encrypted smart card technology regardless of whether credentials are issued as cards or fobs.

How Credential Choice Connects to the Broader Security Infrastructure

Access control doesn’t operate in isolation. In a well-designed commercial security environment, every door event generates data that feeds into a larger picture: who accessed which area, when, and whether that recorded access matches what the surveillance system captured at that moment.

When access control and video surveillance share a compatible architecture, a credential presentation at a door can automatically surface the corresponding camera feed. A security administrator reviewing an anomalous access event doesn’t have to manually correlate timestamps across two separate systems. The integration also enables automated flagging of behaviors like tailgating, where a single credential presentation results in multiple people entering.

A reader that only supports legacy proximity credentials limits the data available to the broader system.
